PRODUCT INFORMATION
Shimano follows suit and also relies on a 12-speed drive for the XTR M9101 group. In contrast to the competition, the Japanese let the biker choose whether he prefers a maximum range (10-51 teeth) or a narrower geared cassette with lower cadence jumps when shifting (10-45 teeth). The latter should particularly suit XC and marathon racers, who can conserve their power reserves by pedaling in the optimal frequency range. For riders who need a particularly stiff wheel, Shimano offers a 10-45 cassette with 11 gears. This is designed for a specially designed XTR hub, which uses the free space of the missing 12th sprocket for a wider hub flange.
Smooth and precise shifting has always been a hallmark of Shimano cassettes. With the Hyperglide cassettes of the last generations, the sprockets were placed in such a way that the chain runs extremely smoothly and with little vibration, especially when switching to a larger sprocket. Hyperglide+ introduces the XTR M9101 cassette. Thanks to this technology, the shifting processes are now just as smooth when shifting into a heavier gear and are 1/3 faster compared to the CS-M9000 cassette.
When constructing the cassette, Shimano relies on a material mix of steel, titanium and aluminum for the sprockets. While the smallest sprockets with the lowest chain wrap and highest load are made of steel, the middle sprockets are made of titanium and the largest cogs are made of aluminum. This load-oriented use of material leads to even wear of the cassette and also extends the service life of the chain. The cassette is held together by an aluminum spider.
